Synopsis
A demonic serial killer, and...
A man who lost his fiancee and tried to take back the pain deep into his bones
Their crazy battle begins
Su-hyun (Lee Byung-hun), head of the NIS security guard team, pledges the most painful revenge with self-destruction and anger that she failed to protect her most precious person when her fiancee Ju-yeon was brutally killed.
Su-hyun finds out that the serial killer Jang Kyung-chul (Choi Min-sik) is the culprit and begins a desperate retribution by repeating the pain and release of him.
However, Jang Kyung-chul, a murderer more vicious than the devil, begins to fight back, enjoying the appearance of an equal opponent he met for the first time in his life…
Movie Plot
Kim Soo-hyun, an NIS agent, was having a great time talking with her fiancee Jang Ju-yeon on the phone even while preparing for her mission. However, she hung up on him as soon as it was time to go to work.
A few days later, Ju-yeon was found dead in a reservoir beneath a bridge. Su-hyun was deeply saddened and shocked at the sight, and she felt endlessly hopeless when she realized that her last phone call with Ju-yeon, whom she had exchanged only a few days ago, was her last.
Su-hyun, vengeful, vowed to make the same person who killed her fiancee while cremating the main character's body, and later selected a total of four suspects with the help of her father-in-law, Jang, who works as a violent leader.
The two people who visited earlier had no income and went to the third suspect's house. Then, he found a ring that the main character was wearing in a secret space hidden in the house, and from then on, he was sure that the third suspect was the culprit.
The suspect's name is Jang Kyung-chul. He appears to be an ordinary man working as a driver for a private cram school, but he was a psychopath who casually committed kidnapping, imprisonment, sexual violence and murder.
Of course, Kyung-chul was responsible for kidnapping and killing the main character, who parked his car on a deserted road and was waiting for a tow truck to arrive on a dark night. Later, she instantly identified Kyung-cheol's whereabouts with agility like an NIS agent, but did not get rid of him immediately.
Instead, he put a capsule loaded with GPS functions and voice microphones that he secretly received from an NIS junior into his mouth, and chose to follow Kyung-chul wherever he committed the crime and punish him.
However, just as the long tail catches him, Kyung-cheol also noticed who Soo-hyun was following him and learned how he was following him, demonstrating his competitive spirit. He then stormed into the father-in-law's home to retaliate.
Review
After being judged twice for the limited screening, it was finally possible to receive the rating for teenagers not to watch on August 11, the day before the release. It was released immediately without the usual preview. The reason for the judgment is that the damage to humanity, such as eating human flesh or throwing pieces of human body into a basket, is excessive. Controversy over the rating review has flared up again.
Although the level is not that high compared to Western slasher movies, the terror I feel that the crime in the movie could happen to me due to the killers of Yoo Young-chul, Jung Nam-gyu, and Kang Ho-soon makes me feel good about Lee Byung-hun along with the eerieness of Choi Min-sik.
In particular, the scene of the taxi robbery and murder in a movie full of cruel violent portrayals is very impressive. According to the reviews, they feel tremendous helplessness and fear after watching because it can happen to them. Moreover, the mental pain is even greater because it is a cruel movie with little humor throughout.
It is divided into two categories: "The Worst Film of 2010" and "Kim Ji-woon's Best Film." The movie is completely divided between likes and dislikes, and it became the first problematic film for Kim Ji-woon, whose previous work was well received by most viewers. In common, people say that mise-en-scène is rather ordinary compared to Kim's previous works.
And some fans of crime thrillers say that the realization of a serial killer character is relatively flat and simple. It is too flat to implement a psychopathic character that is serious about the victim's pain and emotions. It is an opinion that it is not a detailed depiction of a psychopathic serial killer by expressing the preconceived notions about psychopaths of ordinary people on a movie as they are, but rather a simple butcher who destroys people and takes lives without hesitation. Simply killing a lot of people and being cruel does not mean that you will be a murderer character in a good crime thriller.
Contrary to such opinions, however, many people say that Choi Min-sik's performance was enough to rank among the villains in Korean movies. Some say that it was more realistic and scary by making use of the ruthless villainy than the character who highlighted abnormal symptoms of psychosis, the type of killer character at the time, such as the paranoid psychopath or the poor psychopath of the movie "The Chaser."
Choi Min-sik's performance, which blows double insult to the doctor, gives the impression that he is a dangerous outlaw who can really exist in a back alley. As Choi Min-sik's character was never directly defined as a psychopath in the movie, there is no need to play a typical psychopath.
